The Furminator Review

In our heyday, my husband and I had two dogs and six cats. We are both huge animal lovers. Needless-to-say, one of us is always at the vet taking someone for an annual checkup, a wound that needs mending or picking up supplies for our diabetic and hyper-thyroid feline friends.
There I sat one day, waiting our turn to enter the exam room, when I noticed a small TV in the corner. With nothing better to do, I began to watch a demonstration. It showed a groomer using a tiny brush to pull tons of fur from the undercoat of a dog. I was captivated. I didn’t think it was real for a minute, but it was very cool to watch.
As the patients and their families were checking out, I heard one or two say something like, “Those things are great” as they pointed to the TV set. It was called “The Furminator” and it got me thinking.
Cats shed. Most shed badly… all over your carpet. All over your clothes. All over your furniture. Certain dogs can rank right up there with cats. My two Lhasa Apsos left a trail every where they went. Would this really work to pull all that dead fur in the undercoat out?
I was going to show you the video that I saw in my vet’s office, but all the ones uploaded to YouTube were very poor quality. So here’s a video of a man who tested The Furminator against a regular grooming brush.
Pros
It worked! I was shocked. I just knew this was going to be one of those silly products that looked too good to be true… and was. But it literally did for my cats what it did in the promotional video. I call this “making kittens” because it brushes out so much that there are huge balls of fur on the floor when you’re done that look like baby kitties.
One of my four cats loves it. He thinks it feels good while he is being brushed. Two of them think it’s OK. I know they must be cooler with all that thick undercoat gone. The forth is a little prissy thing that can have an attitude sometimes. She’s not overly fond of it, but she will let you brush her for a while. It reduces their need to clean themselves so – in return – it reduces hairballs. (Always a blessing!)
Cons
The only con I found was the price. My vet was selling the small Furminator deshedding tool for $35. Petco has them for $29.99. I came home and started searching the Internet. It didn’t take me long to find that Amazon had these for $19. Depending on who the reseller is, you can sometimes get free shipping.
I have the small Furminator. Since I bought mine a couple of years ago, they’ve come out with more products besides the standard small, medium and large brushes that work for both cats or dogs. They now have a Furminator specifically for cats, but it looks the same as the small Furminator with the exception of the color. The two brushes have the same measurements and the Furminator website doesn’t indicate any difference in function. On Amazon, the small Furminator and the Furminator for cats cost about the same amount.
It really works just like it says, it helps with shedding and I got it at a bargain price. What else could you ask for?
