The Biggest Loser Workout DVD

In my constant quest for a good exercise DVD, I decided to try an oldie, but supposedly a goody. (I’m always changing my workouts so I don’t get bored.) I picked up a copy of The Biggest Loser: The Workout Volume 1. I’d seen the show many times before and was already familiar with Jillian Michaels 30-Day Shred workout DVD which I love and still use.

Pros

It’s not just 1 workout. You get 6 exercise routines on one DVD. Volume 1 includes:

§ Warm-Up (5 minutes)

§ Low-Intensity Cardio (25 minutes)

§ High-Intensity Cardio (20 minutes)

§ Strength & Sculpt (20 minutes)

§ Boot Camp (20 minutes)

§ Cool-Down Routine (20 minutes)

The two most unique features of The Biggest Loser Exercise DVD are that you can:

(A) Customize your exercise routine – It’s great that you can mix and match between the 6 segments. If you like quick workouts (like me) do the 5 minute warm-up then a 20-minute routine. For something more extensive, do the warm-up, the strength or cardio routine and the cool-down. I can get a great workout in under half an hour.

(B) Hear music only without instructor comments – After you’ve done exercise DVDs for so long, you can practically quote what the instructor is going to say next. For some people, that gets annoying. The Biggest Loser Workout DVD gives you the option to just hear the music without the instructor’s direction.

The workouts are easy to follow and offer a lot of variety. I usually will do the warm-up and one of the 20-minute exercise routines. I can switch them up to keep from getting bored.

Heads up! The high-intensity cardio and the boot camp routines are serious business. They will absolutely make you break a sweat.

Cons

The Biggest Loser Exercise DVD uses actual contestants from the TV show under the direction of instructor Bob Harper. They are not fitness professionals. Sometimes the contestants talk over Bob or they aren’t able to keep up with the rest of the group. That can be distracting.

Also, during the warm-up routine, Bob narrates what contestants are doing. You can tell Bob’s voiceover was done in a studio and not while he was watching the contestant do the moves because the don’t always match. Bob will say, “OK, last 1″ and the contestant will do 2 or 3 more. Bob also sounds like he’s half asleep during this segment.

Overall, it’s a great exercise DVD. This will be one that I keep in my regular rotation for years to come.
