L’Oréal Bare Naturale Mineral Foundation Review
Written by Viki on Monday, October 26, 2009 16:28I started using L’Oréal mineral makeup quite by accident. A few years ago, I lost my luggage on the way to the Denver airport. (For those who are curious how THAT happened, it slipped out of the back of our pickup truck – the gate was either left open or it jarred open. And no, we never did find it).
Needless to say, I had to replace everything I needed for my Alaska cruise in Seattle, including my makeup. I couldn’t find the liquid foundation that I normally use before it was time to board the ship, so I grabbed the L’Oréal mineral foundation and hoped for the best.
Pros
It took some getting used to, because the mineral foundation replaces both the traditional liquid foundation and powder. At first, my face felt naked – like I didn’t have any makeup on at all. But I loved the way it evened out my skin tone and gave my face a fresh, matted look that looked natural and not “made up.”
I admit, I’m a minimalist when it comes to makeup. Most days, I only brush on the mineral foundation and apply eyeliner and I’m good to go. But on days where I have dark circles under my eyes or blemishes, I use a cream concealer for a little extra coverage and then use the mineral foundation on top of it. Works great!
One thing I love about the mineral foundation is I never need to touch up or reapply. It stays on looking fresh, even after I’ve been out hiking all day. Since it has an SPF of 19, it helps to protect my face from the sun. It washes off easily with face cleanser or makeup remover.
A little goes a long way. You will only want to tap a small amount of the mineral foundation out of the sifter and then tap any excess makeup off the brush. I’ve found that this little container of makeup lasts a good 9 months or more before I have to replace it.
As with all foundations, it’s crucial to find a good match for your skin tone. The natural beige shade works well for me and matches my skin tone almost perfectly. L’Oréal bare natural mineral foundation comes in 10 different shades. You might have to experiment a bit to find one that works for you.
Cons
I don’t care for the built in brush that comes with it. It doesn’t do a very good job of applying the mineral makeup evenly. Instead, it tends to apply it too heavy in some spots and too light in other, which results in blotches on my face. This can be corrected by using a cotton ball or a makeup sponge to blend in the excess makeup. Or use a good makeup brush that will apply it evenly to begin with.
Since the mineral foundation is like a loose powder, it’s easy to get it on the countertop or your clothes. Though it cleans up easily, I put my makeup on before my clothes so that I don’t end up having to change.
Tip
I’ve found the mineral makeup applies most evenly when first dab it around my face with the brush, then blend it in using a circular motion with the brush. Be sure to blend it into your hairline and jaw line for the most natural look.

I’ve tried this makeup, too, Viki. I liked it, but as you said, it takes some getting used to. With freckles and uneven skin tone, I always feel like I need more although this does do a pretty decent job of evening me out just on its own.
I’ve also used it in place of loose powder. I apply liquid foundation for times when I need/want “full makeup” (if I’m speaking at a seminar, having photos made, etc.) and apply the mineral makeup after my blush. It really helps control the oily look you sometimes get toward the end of the day.
You are right about the brush. I didn’t like it either. Never thought about a cotton ball. Good tip!

Hey, I wanted to follow up. I tried using something other than the brush that comes with the mineral foundation and it works great! Excellent idea! I have this foundation on today as a matter of fact
Also, you have links to Walmart in your post. Some people may not know that you can return makeup to Walmart if the shade isn’t right. Saves a LOT of money when you’re trying to decide which is the right color for you.

Karon, I’m glad that you were able to try the makeup with something other than that horrible brush that comes with it. Also, great tip about being able to easily return makeup to Walmart. I didn’t know that myself!
