Cibavision AirOptix Contact Lenses

“I have never seen anybody have as hard a time with contacts as you’ve had!” That was the remark from almost all my contact-wearing friends about two years ago. I decided – after my eye doctor said the “B” word – that I wanted to try contacts rather than bifocal glasses. My vision had gotten to the point where I was wearing my driving glasses for a lot more than driving so it was time to move on.

I’d tried contacts before probably 25 years ago and they didn’t do well for me at all. But, hey! There had been a lot of advancements in the past two decades so I was confident the optometrist would be able to fit me in contact lenses that would work well for me. Hmph! After the first three visits, I wondered if my confidence was misplaced.

Over the course of two months, we tried four different brands of contacts; none of them did worth a flip. Then, on a last-ditch effort, the doctor said the magic words, “Let’s try AirOptix contact lenses from Cibavision.”

I’d never heard of Cibavision at that point, but was willing to try one more time. Anything not to have to succumb to bifocals. I just wasn’t ready for that. So, the free trial pair was handed to me and in my eyes they went.

Pros

The Cibavision AirOptix contacts are monthly lenses so they are a little bit thicker than biweeklies. I was nervous about that because one of the lenses I’d tried before that didn’t work well at all was the Bausch & Lomb PureVision. They were much too thick and felt like I had glass in my eyes. I counted the minutes every day until I could take them out.

But the AirOptix contacts were just the right thickness. They never hurt my eyes and hardly took any adjusting at all. Plus, because they were a bit thicker, they were easier to handle and put in. Unlike the thinner biweekly lenses that tend to fold, roll up and smush out of your eye if you blink, these popped right in with no problem and stayed.

They felt moist. One complaint I had with the other contact lenses I tried was that my eyes felt sticky and itchy. Almost like I had a grain or two of sand in my eyes. Come to find out this was due to lack of moisture and breathability. The Cibavision AirOptix breath much better than any of the other lenses I tried. Most days I wear these from morning till night in perfect comfort.

Better vision correction was another plus with the AirOptix contacts. With previous brands, I was only able to get corrected vision at around 20/40, but with the Cibavision lenses, I see 20/20 in both eyes. I’ve even noticed my night blindness is a bit better with these contacts… not perfect, mind you, but noticeably better.

Cons

I am not able to get a full 30 days out of the AirOptix contact lenses. Usually I have to change to a fresh pair in about 25 days. However, considering the way my eyes are, this is almost certainly an issue with them and not the contacts themselves. During my next visit, I’ll ask my eye doctor and see what he says.

Cibavision are a tad more expensive than some monthly lenses, but not much. Mine are for astigmatism so that always adds a few extra dollars to the price. The ones that are not toric (astigmatism lenses) are priced the same as most other lenses.

However, I get mine at 1800Contacts.com. (Read my review of them.) That’s much less than ordering from the doctor’s office and they do all the work for you. They’ll even take back unopened contacts if you should ever need to exchange them for any reason. Shop around… everybody charges something different so check a few sites before deciding who to buy from.

As I said, I’ve been in the Cibavision AirOptix contact lenses for two years… almost three… and I love them. When nothing else would work, these came through like a champ!
