With just 2 of us in the house, we often have a problem of produce going bad before we can eat it. Lettuce is a prime example, but cantaloupes, watermelons and others that are normally purchased whole also end up in the trash (at least partially) because they go bad before we can finish them.

I’d been looking for something that actually worked to keep produce fresh longer when I saw the Debbie Meyer Green Bags on TV. I was hopeful so I got some to try out at home.

Pros

They are reusable up to 10 times which can save you a good deal of money over the long run. Since they are thin and pliable, they don’t take up much space in the fridge: you can still put produce in your crisper bin even when using these bags.

They are easy to use. Just wash and thoroughly dry produce then place your fruits or veggies inside the bags. Fold the top over and you’re done.

Cons

They don’t work. I tried them on lettuce first. The lettuce got just as brown and soggy as it did without using the Debbie Meyer Green Bags. Other fruits and veggies showed similar results. Don’t waste your money.

Recommended? No

Want to try a couple of them for yourself? Let me know and I’ll mail you some of the ones I have left over if you promise to come back and honestly let us know what you thought (good or bad).

What did work? The Progressive lettuce keeper.

I think lettuce goes bad faster than just about any other produce. I’d been searching for a way to keep it fresh longer for years. I’d bought bowls, Debbie Meyer Green Bags and other gadgets… some worked OK and some not at all. Then I came upon this rather unusual-looking thing so I figured why not, I’d take it for a test drive, too.

Pros

It actually works! I was really expecting to toss it in the recycle bin or the trash like all the other options, but it’s a keeper (no pun intended).

The Progressive Lettuce Keeper is reusable. You pay for it once and it’s good for life. There’s no need to keep buying refills or new bags or anything else. It’s all self-contained. It has ventilation settings and the label tells you where to set the vent for lettuce, cucumbers, celery and a number of other fruits and veggies.

It’s big without being too big. There’s plenty of room for a head of ice burg lettuce or 3 romaine lettuce heads or 2 fresh bunches of broccoli or 5 – 8 pounds of carrots or 10 – 12 apples.

Moisture buildup isn’t a problem as with most other produce keepers. The bottom of the bowl has small slits that allow the moisture to trickle down the sides and out onto a reservoir designed to hole the water until you empty it. It also comes with a divider so you can put 2 types of produce into the bowl at the same time.

The manufacturer claims it will keep produce fresh up to 2 weeks longer than usual. I believe this. I see this with lettuce all the time. (That’s what we usually keep in our container.)

It’s dishwasher safe and doubles as a colander.

Cons

It won’t fit in my produce crisper so I have to make room for it on a shelf. Its oblong shape does make it easier and more space-conservative than a round bowl, however.

One head of ice burg lettuce or 3 heads of romaine lettuce fills it up. So, if you want to use it for lettuce and also some other types of produce, you’ll have to get more than one container.

Recommended? Yes
